Ok, guys, ok! I humbly accept your acknowledgement as a schmoozer!!

If you follow Italy blogs, you’ve probably become aware of the schmooze power making its way through our little blogging community, and beyond. I’ve been nominated by four lovely blogs for the “Schmooze Award,” created by Mike at Ordinary Folk, and defined as:

Good schmoozers effortlessly weave their way in and out of the blogosphere, leaving friendly trails and smiles, happily making new friends along the way. They don’t limit their visits to only the rich and successful, but spend some time to say hello to new blogs as well. They are the ones who engage others in meaningful conversations, refusing to let it end at a mere hello — all the while fostering a sense of closeness and friendship.

Thank you to Jessica in Rome, Bleeding Espresso, NYC/Caribbean Ragazza, and Valerie at 2 Baci in a Pinon Tree.

I like the definition of the award because out of the four people who nominated me, I’ve already met two of them in person (Jessica and Arlene a.k.a. NYC). Sooner or later I hope to meet up with Valerie and Michelle as well, especially because luckily they both live in Italy.

Ah, blogging. It’s almost my one year anniversary and I’ll admit to you that at this time last year, I had never *in my life* read a blog! Can you believe it? What a great resource and network for meeting new people and sharing ideas. Thank you bloggers!

As an official “schmoozer,” it’s my job to now pick five blogs that are schmooze-worthy as well. Besides the schmoozers who nominated me, I can also recommend:

1. African Kelli
Now, not that my dear college pal Kelli needs any nominations…she has a positively HUGE fan base already (I’m starting to think about making membership cards). However, she is the living embodiment of the definition of this award! She manages to schmooze in between training for a triathlon; going to Africa and S. America for her work with health care in developing nations; sewing (she and my pal Finny Knits have a contest going using Amy Butler’s book in which Ms. Butler herself will judge the grand prize winner); whipping up various baked goods for her softball team/frisbee team/bagel boys at the bagel shop… oh people, the list goes on! But she always finds time to follow the 200+ blogs in her feed reader, leaving encouraging comments and supporting fellow bloggers. Schmooze on, Kel!

2. Finny Knits
Speaking of Finny… I know, people, I’m biased, another of my BFFs in real life… forgive me. But when it comes to blogging, Finny cannot go unmentioned, because if it weren’t for her, my blog wouldn’t exist! She encouraged me to start blogging, and as far as the smiles in the schmooze definition go… I rarely leave her blog without having had not only a smile but a bonified LOL. The woman is hilarious.

3. Ms. Adventures in Italy
I know Sara has already been nominated by a few bloggers, but I couldn’t NOT nominate her, because she has been my inspiration in blogging here in Italy! When I started, she was one of my first commenters. We developed a wonderful friendship offline and she has become my blogging guru as well. We co-hosted World Nutella Day (one of her million great ideas) and I got to know a lot of new blogs through it. The idea of “weaving effortlessly in the blogosphere” to me is Sara.

4. In Search of Dessert
When Jessica’s blog popped up from a rural corner of Switzerland, I was immediately drawn in by her excellent writing. I saw her sprinkling comments around the blogosphere and we somehow got to emailing each other, forming a friendship although we still haven’t met in person. We even recently collaborated to form The Sisterhood of the Traveling Books. How’s that for schmooze power?

5. From the Shores of Introspect and Retrospect
Wanderlust Scarlett has definitely weaved her way effortlessly into my blogosphere, being such a supportive reader and faithfully leaving me friendly comments that brighten my day.

So there are my schmoozers.

While we’re on the topic of blogging and the blogging community… I would like to start expanding my circle of blogs… which blog(s) do you highly recommend I add to my feed reader, and why??

Fellow schmoozer here..And the schmoozing continues with your last paragraph! A great example of using your schmooze to your best advantage.

My suggestion is: The Dilbert Blog because it’s so funny. He is not only a comic, but comedian (if that makes sense). Very funny stuff. (

How fun Shelley! I’m so glad we got re-acquainted through your blog. I thorougly enjoy reading it daily, and from your blog I have found a few other delightful reads! 🙂 Although I don’t have a blog myself, who knows – maybe I’ll have to start one if we both actually start some sewing projects together!

You definitely deserve this award! I first came across your blog when I was researching apartments to stay in while in Italy this fall. Although I was unable to book one of the apartments you manage, I continued to check out the website for all the useful information you have posted. Needless to say, I was overjoyed to find your blog and have been following it ever since around March. I am continually impressed with the content of your posts – your attention to detail, wit and the fantastic pics you post. Before coming across your blogs and those of your blogging buddies, I was just like you were a year ago – I had never read a blog before. So, this is all just to say THANKS and keep up the good work!

congratulations! Just wanted to say that I too (like Sherry) have been following your blog for awhile now. I’ve been in Rome for 10 years and find your spirit and warmth come through in all your posts. It can be a difficult transition to live here yet you always write with a smile! Keep up the good work and enjoy your kudos!

Wow, four nominations! You’re the schmooze queen! Do you feel the love?

  9. Shelley, At Home in Rome August 2, 2007 at 10:25 am #

Hey, I’m feeling the love, folks! Thanks for all the kind words. This is literally the kind of stuff that keeps me going. Some days (um, lately, like with this ungodly heat) my motivation is way low. But yet, comments like this and thoughts such as “there is always another gelato place to try out” are what keep me going!!!
