Sacro e Profano

21 Mar

Good morning from Rome on this beautiful first day of spring!

And what do I see as my bus rumbles up Via Marmorata this morning? The most splendid example of sacred and profane Roman-style that I could possibly imagine.

Hey remember when I posted about campaign posters and the last, super bestest one was “Everyone With Berlusconi?” Well, you didn’t think they’d stop after the elections, did you? OH HELLLL NO.

And remember how the City of Rome was so sweet to spend tax (evaded) euros on that fun little poster to wish Benedict a happy goodbye, saying we’d never forget him? Right. Well a goodbye to “Papa Emerito” (Pope Emeritus) wouldn’t be complete without a friendly “welcome” to Francis.

And therein folks lies the beauty of Rome: sacred Francis next to all-too-profane Berlusconi. God bless them both.

Oh, and BTW? Just so you know, everyone’s with Berlusconi in that poster against, and I quote: “fiscal, bureaucratic and judicial OPPRESSION.” Oh dear God, help us all, as Berlusconi is oppressed on all three. Love you, Italy. You never fail.

Remind me again, which one is sacred and which one is profane? In Italy the line is always blurry. And thanks for the reminder to AVOID Piazza del Popolo on Saturday!

Francesco seems like a loving own to earth human being. Benedict reminded me of that Nazi Sgt. Schultz from Hogan’s heroes.

I love how Berlusconi was hiding out in the hospital to evade showing up at the Ruby trial. He really has no shame.

Wouldn’t that have been genius? No, this is sheer random fluke. The best.
