Now, you see—normally I’m not a proponent of random street vandalism. But here we have an example of what I can only refer to as a “special mention.”

First thing to realize is that this pole wasn’t here on Via Florida (near the cat shelter on Largo Argentina) until just recently. Remember how the 8 construction got us a tram line that goes all the way to Piazza Venezia? Right.

Well, might I add that along with this addition has come a group of about 5 ATAC male employees who loiter (God how I’ve always wanted an excuse to use that word) in front of my office which just so happens to be like, right in front of the new 8 depot. No, seriously—every morning these 5 or so dudes just hang out at the corner near the 8 tram depot, shooting the proverbial shit loudly outside my office window. True story: two days ago as I was walking across to my office, one of them was actually boarding the 8 to DRIVE the damn thing (who woulda thunk it?) and he calls out (I believe for my benefit) to his cohort of male loiterers: “The brake is the pedal in the middle, right?!” God I love Rome. I turn to the pack of wolves and go, “Wow. He’s really reassuring as a driver, isn’t he?” (Actual words, for those of you who speak Italian: “Ahò, quello mi ispira proprio fiducia!”) and they jokingly reassured me that it was all in good fun. Yes, he actually DOES know the difference between the brake pedal and … the other pedals.

But I digress.

Point being, those poles with “PIZZA” and an arrow written on them are there to hold up the cables that the 8 tram connects to from above. And thus was born a new source of free advertising for my favorite, absolutely hands-down no-contest favorite, pizza al taglio in the city (full disclosure: I am not a foodie blogger and therefore must shun any and all references to Bonci. Perdonami but I just can’t get on the Bonci fan bandwagon. It’s just too reminiscent of when I worshipped NKOTB when I was in 7th grade. I guess that would be the modern-day equivalent of being a Justin Bieber fan.) PIZZERIA FLORIDA.

Yep, some genius, and I mean that in all sincerity, decided that he’d take a Sharpie and write “PIZZA —->” to inform all passersby that in fact, there is pizza to be had on the other side of the street. It’s completely understandable, because Pizzeria Florida is completely understated in appearance. No frills. And God bless them for their “take a number” system. I bow down in gratefulness for this touch of civility.

But folks, words cannot describe the gastronomic bliss that one experiences when they decide to put on offer their “Crema di zucca, pancetta e provola” … no. There are no words. Frankly we all know that bacon brings bliss in and of itself. But when you add pumpkin puree and combine that with smoked provolone cheese? No, you just need to be nominated for a pizza Nobel. It is heaven in a square.

Plus, the ladies and man who run the place are SO sweet. Yesterday I witnessed this: foreigners come in, buy pizza, leave €2 on the counter. Lady gently calls them back inside: “Signor!” (they were Spanish) and holds up the €2 coin AS TO GIVE IT BACK. At which point, said Signor indicates that it was for them. AS A TIP. Holy crap. Lady about fainted. So sweet. Seriously, like where are you going to find local proprietors who don’t try to rip off tourists? Warms by cynical heart, I’ll tell you what!

So, there you have it. Pizza. Go. You have my whole-hearted officially non-Bonci endorsement. I may not have a degree in gastronomy but I know pumpkin puree and bacon when I taste it.

Thank you and I like your style of writing as well….Rome is the Eternal City as it smacks of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly….not necessarily in that order…Wayne Kurtz.

italians are smart and stupid…That Pizza-on-a-pole is an easy way to not pay the tax on an official signal or plate that indicates the pizza shop! Plus the cost of the signal or plate.
